Welcome! to Journey’s Thread!
This is officially my first post.
This post is where I try to explain what I plan to do with this site . . .
Right here . . .
In this spot . . .
Okay . . .
Here goes . . .
What’s the Big Idea?
The premise here at Journey’s Thread is that it’s all connected – we’re all connected. And why not start with knitting? Why not use knitting as our point of entry?
Like “six degrees of separation” (the idea that the connection of any person to another can be realized in six steps or less), I believe we can trace any topic right back to the needles.
My connection target of choice this post is yoga. This is an easy connect. We’ll get to the tougher stuff further down the road.
My yoga journey began about 16 years ago when a friend invited me to attend a class at a studio in NYC. I wish I could tell you that it was love at first Downward Dog, but there were a few things blocking the yogic light. Eventually, though, I developed a pretty steady practice. Years before that I had stopped knitting to concentrate on other things and because knitting and computer work kept my hands and wrists constantly achy. Back then I used Tai Chi to relieve discomfort. In the past 5 years, my interest in knitting has resurfaced. Now, a regular yoga practice and some qi gong help to keep my hands healthy.
So the immediate benefits of the physical practice of yoga are a no brainer.
But wait. There’s more.
Recently, I took a one-month yoga teacher training intensive for my 200 hour instructors certificate. My classmates ranged from 17 to 61 in age. (I fall on the long-toothed end of that range). Not only am I a devout introvert but, like some people fear clowns, I am unreasonably anxious around anyone under – let’s say 20. It’s been that way since I was 10. How, I asked myself, could I ever connect with these young’uns. Well, turns out the youngest of the group was the one and only fellow knitter. While the fence did not fall, the gate was certainly opened. Maybe she’ll grace us with a guest post one day soon.
It might sound like a small thing, however it was at the moment I learned of the unexpected knitting connection between me and this young woman that the premise of Journey’s Thread became a real possibility to me. If you want to find it, there’s a connection. All of our Journeys are connected and, if we choose, the ties that bind can be knitted ones.
